A Letter From the Principal

Welcome to the Connor Shaw Center, the academic home of all fifth grade students in Peotone School District.

Our school is a fifth grade attendance center, housing only one grade. The goal at the fifth grade center is to educate children in a challenging environment while helping them transition from an elementary school setting to Peotone Junior High School.

A dedicated staff drives teaching and learning at the Connor Shaw Center and facilities a curriculum aligning with the Illinois Learning Goals and Standards. All curriculum materials are reviewed and revised on a regular basis. Enrichment opportunities are available to students in the areas of reading, science and math during the 2007-2008 school year. We also provide instruction in the areas of physical education, art, general music, and band. Smart boards, computer projectors and document cameras in addition weekly time in our Macintosh computer lab. Our current enrollment is approximately one hundred and fifty students. We house six sections of fifth grade with class sizes around twenty five students per class.

As students in the district come together for the first time in fifth grade, the Connor Shaw Center also provides extracurricular opportunities for students through an intramural sports program. We offer students the opportunity to participate in coed sports such as volleyball and track in addition to boy’s basketball and girl’s basketball. Extracurricular opportunities also include a newspaper club, a yearbook club, and drama club. Through extracurricular activities and a number of school wide activities such as a Rocketry Unit, Thanksgiving Feast, participation in the community P.E.A.C.E., meals program, and D.A.R.E., we strive to create a learning environment that is challenging, caring, and an exciting place to learn and attend each day.

The Connor Shaw Center is proud to receive the support of the Connor Shaw Center Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO board members represent each elementary school in our school district. Activities such as fundraising, room parents, emergency calling trees, and social events for the students will be coordinated with school and designated members of the PTO. This is an exciting opportunity to continue parent involvement and support at the fifth grade level.

Please contact the office if you have questions or if we may be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kathy Davis
