ROLL CALL
At 7:00 p.m. President Bettenhausen called the regular meeting to order and requested all present to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.  A roll call was taken and the following members answered aye:   Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Nugent, Mr. Virgl, Mr. Rademacher, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Bettenhausen. Mr. Moore was absent.

VISITOR’S LOG
No visitor’s signed the Visitor’s Log.

SPEAKER’S LOG
The following people signed the Speaker’s Log:  Melody Gass of Monee, Joy Depperman of Peotone, Dakota Cowger of Peotone, Rhiannon Keene of Peotone, Judy Ogalla of Monee, Vicki Moore of Monee and David Rock of Peotone.

MINUTES
Mr. Rademacher made a motion to approve the Minutes of the Committee of the Whole and Executive Session of February 21, 2011 and Minutes of the Regular Meeting and Executive Session of February 21, 2011.  Mr. Nugent seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.

FINANCE REPORTS
Mr. Nugent made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report as presented by the administration.  Mrs. Robinson seconded the motion and on a roll call vote the following members answered aye:  Mr. Virgl, Mr. Nugent, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Rademacher, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Bettenhausen.

Mr. Nugent made a motion to approve the Imprest Fund Bills as presented by the administration.  Mr. Virgl seconded the motion and on a roll call vote the following members answered aye:  Mr. Virgl, Mr. Nugent, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Rademacher, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Bettenhausen.

Mrs. Robinson made a motion to approve the General Fund Bills as presented by the administration.  Mr. Nugent seconded the motion and on a roll call vote the following members answered aye:  Mr. Virgl, Mr. Nugent, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Rademacher, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Bettenhausen.

ACADEMIC STUDENT OF THE MONTH
President Bettenhausen presented a certificate of commendation to the March Board of Education Academic Student of the Month, Jacob Hilliard, son of James and Carol Hilliard of Monee.  Jacob is a junior at Peotone High School with a grade point of 4.571 and ranks twelfth in his class of 153 students based on grade point average.  He is actively involved in numerous extra-curricular activities which include:  National Honor Society, Student Council, FFA, International Culture Club and Wrestling.  Jacob was a 2011 Wrestling State Qualifier.  Jacob has held the office of class vice president for three (3) years.  He currently serves as FFA President after previously serving in the offices of FFA Treasurer and Greenhand Vice President.  He is the 2011 FFA Section 10 Board President and has been the State and Section Delegate for the FFA State Convention.  Jacob has been a representative to many leadership camps and conferences.  He has been honored with many awards for his extra-curricular participation.  Jacob has assisted in numerous community service projects.  In addition, he is a member of the newly developed Principal Advisory Committee.  Overall, Jacob is a highly involved student at Peotone High School.

President Bettenhausen presented a certificate and commendation to recognize the accomplishments of the following Peotone Junior High School February Students of the Month:

VISITOR SPEAKERS
Melody Gass of Monee addressed the Board with her concerns regarding the lunch menu.  She requested that the lunch menu be adapted to include the grams of each food to better count the carbohydrates for diabetic students.

Joy Depperman of Peotone acknowledged the many accomplishments of Ms. Nick, Peotone Elementary Principal.  Mrs. Depperman extended well wishes in her future endeavors from the staff of Peotone Elementary.

Dakota Cowger of Peotone and Rhiannon Keene of Peotone addressed those present with an announcement of the FFA Flower Sales.  Dakota Cowger, Treasurer of the FFA announced that the FFA Banquet is scheduled for April 10, 2011.  Tickets are still available.  Dakota reported that the greenhouse in full swing.  The students will be selling watermelon plants, tomato plants, hanging baskets and flowers this year.  Dakota reported on the current accomplishments of the Peotone FFA Chapter and the students that will be moving on to state competitions.  The Peotone FFA Chapter has elected to collect cans for a food drive.

Judy Ogalla of Monee addressed the Board regarding recent rumors in the community about the Superintendent.  President Bettenhausen addressed Mrs. Ogalla’s concerns.

Vicki Moore of Monee reported on the current district referendum.

David Rock of Peotone reported on ways the board and the district are able to resolve the problem of placing a referendum on the ballot to decrease the working cash bonds under the current statue.

BOARD POLICIES
Mr. Nugent made a motion to approve the new board policies as recommended by the administration.  Mrs. Robinson seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.

AMENDED SCHOOL CALENDAR FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR
Mr. Nugent made a motion to approve the amended school calendar for the 2010-2011 school year as recommended by the administration.  Mr. Baumgartner seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.

IHSA MEMBERSHIP
Mr. Baumgartner made a motion to approve the renewal of the IHSA Membership for Peotone C.U.S.D. #207-U.  Mr. Nugent seconded the motion and on a roll call vote the following members answered aye:  Mr. Virgl, Mr. Nugent, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Rademacher, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Bettenhausen.

Dr. McKinney acknowledged the accomplishments of Tina Nick, Principal at Peotone Elementary and Kathy Offerman, Girls Physical Education Teacher at Peotone High School.  Mr. Nugent made a motion to approve the following personnel as recommended by the administration:

BUSINESS MANAGER REPORT
Ms. Rose, Business Manager, reported that the state owes the District approximately $1.8 million.  
The district has placed a breakdown by category on the website.  Ms. Rose reported that it will be the district’s goal to provide hot lunch to Green Garden Elementary, Wilton Center Elementary and the Connor Shaw Center.  Ms. Rose discussed the new on-line registration process.  Ms. Rose announced a Finance Committee Meeting scheduled for March 30, 2011.  Ms. Rose discussed the current bond bidding for the district.

CURRICULUM REPORT
Mr. Preuss and Mrs. Davis extended their gratitude to the teachers and administrators who helped organize the ISAT testing.  Mr. Preuss extended his gratitude to the members of the Technology Team.

Mr. Preuss and Mrs. Davis reported that the Elementary Language Arts Adoption Committee has meet and has chosen two (2) series.  The representatives from these series will be answering any questions or concerns from our teachers.  The adoption will be brought before the Board in April.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT
Dr. McKinney reported that he has been assisting with interviews at the high school and junior high school.  Dr. McKinney requested that the board begin working on a Strategic Plan for the district as the previous plan has expired.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS
Dee Oliver, Principal of Peotone High School, reported that the high school is busy preparing the master schedule, hiring new teacher, preparing for the end of the year scholarships, events and planning graduation.  The ACT prep course is progressing well.  The student will participate in a sample test on Saturday.  The Peotone High School Post Prom Committee held an amazing fundraiser at the Kankakee Country Club on March 12.

Tina Nick, Principal of Peotone Elementary, reported that Family Literacy Night and the Scholastic Book Fair will take place on Thursday.  The teachers and students have been busy decorating for the event.  The high students that are members of Teens Against Drugs & Tobacco provided the fourth grade students with an outstanding presentation on the dangers of drug and tobacco use.
Ms. Nicks reported that pre-kindergarten registration is scheduled for April 14 at Peotone Elementary.  Miss Depperman will be holding a fourth grade science fair on April 6.

Tracy Hiller, Principal of Green Garden Elementary, reported that the students are participating in the St. Jude’s Math-a-Thon during the month of March to raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  The Third Annual Talent Show at Green Garden Elementary is scheduled for March 17th at 6:00 p.m.  Family Literacy Night and the Scholastic Book Fair are scheduled for Thursday at Green Garden Elementary.  On March 2nd, all students were invited to participate in the Raz-Kids After School Program.  This program will begin the week of March 28th.  Students will work independently in the computer lab to improve their reading skills by using the online program.

Tracy Hiller, Principal of Wilton Center Elementary, reported that Mrs. Kaveney and Miss Ashley Smith are planning Family Literacy Night scheduled for May 3rd at Wilton Center Elementary.  The scholastic Spring Book Fair will be tied to the planned Family Literacy night.  The Roadrunner Carnival will be held on March 11th at Wilton Center Elementary School.  Many of the Peotone High School students have volunteered to work this event.  Mrs. Hiller stated that kindergarten registration will take place on April 14 at Peotone Elementary.

Scott Wenzel, Principal of Peotone Junior High School, reported that the Peotone Junior High Band and Chorus will be competing in the IESA Solo and Ensemble competition at Bradley Central on Saturday, April 2nd.  The Junior High School Scholastic Bowl Team is off to a great start this year as they are 2 – 0 this season.  The Spelling Team has begun their season.  They will be competing in the Knights of Columbus Spelling Contest on March 18 and will compete in the Kan-Will Conference Spelling Contest on March 30.  Mr. Wenzel reported that the Math Team will be competing in the Kan-Will Math Conference on March 16.  The seventh and eighth grade Volleyball team finished their season with a 13-8 record.  Mr. Wenzel reported that the Track Team has begun practice for the 2011 season.  Mr. Wenzel continued to report that the Peotone Junior High Wrestling Team just finished a very successful season.  Seven (7) wrestlers qualified for the IESA Sectional.  Jordyn Wasiel and Tom Ruffino progressed to the state level.  Jordyn Wasiel was awarded state champion at the 185lb division.

Kathy Davis, Principal of the Connor Shaw Center, reported that ISAT testing will be completed by Thursday, March17.  Mrs. Davis reported that the school-wide spelling be took place on Thursday, March 10.  The champion speller for the Connor Shaw Center was Alec Bieschke and the runner up was Jonathan Estrada.  Both students represented the Connor Shaw Center on Friday, March 18 in the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee held at Peotone Junior High School.  The Connor Shaw Center will sponsor a step-up day for both students and parents.  Step-up Day will orientate both the fifth grade students and their parents for the move to Peotone Junior High School.  Mrs. Susan Justus, Connor Shaw Art Teacher, reported on an origami project currently underway at the Connor Shaw Center.  The students will be making and displaying 1,000 cranes which will be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan upon completion of the project.
Larry Piwnicki, Director of Special Education, shared with the Board a proposal to provide a program to provide services to students with cognitive disabilities and autism.  The programs capacity will be thirteen (13) students.

OTHER
Vice President Rademacher extended his gratitude to Peotone High School students and Mrs. Sue Bartels for their help with the Chamber of Commerce job fair.

President Bettenhausen extended his apology to the crowd for the cramped quarters during the meeting.

EXECUTIVE SESSION
At 8:09 p.m. Mr. Virgl moved that the Board meet in Executive Session for the purpose of the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of other specific employees of the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee to determine its validity.  Mr. Nugent seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.

RETURN TO OPEN SESSION
At 9:23 p.m. Mr. Nugent made a motion that the Board Return to Open Session.  Mr. Virgl seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.

At 9:24 p.m. Mr. Bettenhausen moved that the meeting be adjourned.  Mr. Virgl seconded the motion and on a voice vote there were six (6) ayes and no nays.
